Chapter 17: Both Of Us

He didn't say another word until we were in the parking lot behind the pharmacy.

Then he said all of it.

"Three weeks," Wayne said. "You sat across from me at supper for three weeks and let me count out money I didn't have."

"Wayne."

"I paid that man forty-one thousand five hundred dollars. I emptied the stud account. I didn't sleep. And the whole time you owned the ground I was standing on."

"You gave me your shares and you never told me," I said. "You wrote no on my birthday. You signed up for a university without my name on the form. Which of us kept more?"

"That was to protect you."

"This was to find out if you'd want me when I couldn't be anything to you but me."

He went white around the mouth.

"I wanted to know if you saw the ranch when you looked at me," I said. "Or the dead woman's kid you felt sorry for. Or me."

"You think I'd touch you for a ranch?"

"I think you wouldn't touch me at all, and then you did."

A woman coming out of the pharmacy looked at us and quickly looked away.

Wayne took my arm above the elbow, not hard, and walked me to his truck.

"Get in," he said.

"Where are we going?"

"Anywhere that isn't here."

He drove out of town north on the ridge road with his jaw clamped.

I sat with my arms crossed and watched the sage flats go by.

Ten miles out he pulled off onto a dirt track by an old stock tank and killed the engine.

Neither of us moved.

"I'm so angry at you I can't see straight," he said.

"Good." I got out and slammed the door. "I'm angry too."

He got out the other side.

We stood on either side of the hood in the wind and glared at each other.

Then I walked around the front of the truck and took two handfuls of his shirt.
