Chapter 17: The River

Ward read lot fourteen standing up at the kitchen table with his coffee going cold.

He read it once, and then he set the catalog down very gently.

"I never bred that mare," he said.

"I know."

"Registry papers need a stud certificate with the owner's signature. Mine." He tapped the page. "Darrell will have one. And it won't be mine."

"He forged it."

"Or got someone to."

"Then we take the ledger to the sale," I said. "Every cover is written in it with the date. There's no line for his mare."

"It's your ledger, Lulu."

"It's our ledger."

He looked at me over the cup.

"Ours," he said, and something went across his face that I hadn't seen yet and wanted to see again.

Then the cook put a plate of eggs in front of him and told him to eat, and he did.

The sale was in eight days.

We spent the afternoon moving the pregnant mares to the river pasture, where the grass came up green, and when the work was done the sun was low and the hands had gone to the bunkhouse.

Ward tied the horses at the old cottonwood and walked down the bank.

I followed him.

The Boulder runs wide and shallow there, over gravel that was warm all day, and the light on it at dusk is gold and flat.

He stopped at the water and took off his hat and washed his face.

I watched his shoulders under the wet shirt.

"You're staring," he said.
