Chapter 19: Yes, Daddy

Ward laid the six photographs on the kitchen table in a row, and nobody spoke.

The cook looked at them over her coffee for a long time.

Then she turned the first one face down with one finger and went back to her eggs.

"He wants the ledger," Ward said. "Tomorrow he'll want the ranch."

"He doesn't get either."

"These go to the sheriff, to the paper, to every church in the county." His voice was level. "I can stand it. It's you I'm"

"I'm eighteen," I said. "I own this ranch. I did nothing wrong, and neither did you. If he wants to show the county two adults on a river bank, he can have the film developed at the drugstore."

"They'll say what they said at the feed store."

"Then they'll say it to my face, and I'll say it back." I put my hand flat on the pictures. "Not one word of it is going in Darrell's pocket."

Ward looked at me.

Something in the set of his mouth eased.

"You're your mother's girl," he said.

"I'm mine."

"That too."

The upstairs bathroom has a clawfoot tub my grandfather bought secondhand in 1962.

It is deep and white, with iron feet shaped like lion paws, and when it's full you can lie back and not touch either end.

I filled it that afternoon until the steam fogged the window.

Ward stood in the door with his arms folded.

"I have thirty mares to check."

"They'll keep an hour."

"You said that yesterday."

"And it was true."

I undid my braid and let the hair fall down my back, and I stepped into the tub.

The water closed over my knees, my thighs, my belly.

"Get in," I said.

"Lulu."

"You said not in the house. You said it three times, and you've been in the kitchen, the stairs and my bed." I leaned my head against the rim. "Get in my grandfather's tub, Ward."
