Chapter 11: Subject I

"Lorna," I said. "Who is Subject I?"

She slid the phone into her pocket without answering it.

The two Redfern wolves who had been at the door were gone, and the washroom errand was clearly a lie someone had arranged.

I understood that I was alone with her, and that she had planned it.

"You left this open on purpose," I said.

"I left it where you'd look." She came in and shut the door behind her, and her voice was warm and level, the same voice that had told me twin bedtime stories. "You always look. You're thorough. It's one of the things I like about you."

"You wrote my doses down for six years."

"I wrote down a treatment." She sat on the bench and folded her hands. "Iris, you were happy. You had a husband, two children and a house. You never once asked why you slept so well."

"You drugged me."

"I kept you safe," she said. "A Dunbar wolf wakes up and the Blackwater pack goes to war. Do you know how many people died the last time? I did not want you to be one of them."

My claws pushed through my fingertips, and I felt Sable at the front of me, hot and rising.

"You smiled at me every week," I said. "You sat in my kitchen. You called me your closest friend."
