Chapter 12: Red Light
I did not move.
I stood in the gatehouse with my hands held open at my sides, claws and all, and kept my feet exactly where they were.
Lorna's face was crumpled and wet, and her bruise looked very dark under the bare bulb.
"Deputy," she said, and her voice shook. "She came at me. Please."
"Ma'am, put your hands where I can see them," the deputy said to me.
"They're where you can see them," I said. "I haven't moved since she walked in. Look at the ceiling."
He looked up.
In the corner above the door sat a small camera with a red light.
"The gatehouse is a working checkpoint," Ronan said from the doorway. "It records video and sound. It has been recording since Ms. Sedge sat down at four o'clock, and my Beta wrote down the time."
Lorna's tears stopped.
It was only for a moment.
Then she put a hand to her cheek again, and I saw her decide to keep going.
"She wasn't herself," she said. "She was shouting."
"Then it will show that," the deputy said.
He walked to the camera, and Ronan's Beta already had a laptop open on the bench.
Everyone crowded in, the deputy, Ansel, Ronan, me and Lorna, in a space meant for one guard.
The Beta pressed a key.
On the screen was Lorna, alone in the gatehouse before I came in, with her phone at her ear.
"Yes, the notebook is where she'll find it," she said. "Bring the deputy. And Ansel, you pay me for the twins' doses by the month, so you can sign the consent too."
