Chapter 16: The Visitor
Dal's mother got to the porch before any of us.
She stood at the top of the steps in her flannel shirt with her arms folded.
She looked like a fence post that had decided to be polite.
"Good morning," said the woman with the clipboard. "Is this the Yarbrough residence? I'm from the county. We had a report about a child's welfare."
"A report," said Dal's mother.
"It's routine. Nothing to be alarmed about."
"Then you'll want coffee."
She said it.
Dal stood a step behind with his jaw locked.
I stood behind him with my hand on his back, and I felt him breathing.
The caseworker came up the steps and into the kitchen.
She looked at the floor, and the stove, and the pie cooling on the sill.
She looked at the fridge, which had eleven drawings on it and a magnet shaped like a pig.
Birdie sat at the table with her boots on and Mrs. Dunbar in her lap.
"Hello," said the caseworker. "What's your name?"
"Birdie Yarbrough. I'm six and three quarters. This is Mrs. Dunbar."
"Is she a hen?"
"She's a Rhode Island Red and she's two. She doesn't like clipboards."
