Chapter 17: The Fitting
Five weeks of being sorry had given me a permanent headache.
I stood in a bridal salon on Frankfort Avenue in a sage-green dress my stepmother had picked out.
I smiled at a three-way mirror until my face hurt.
The room smelled like roses and steamed tulle.
Tabitha stood on a little round platform in the middle of it, in ivory silk, with two seamstresses pinning her hem.
Gwen sat on a velvet couch with a glass of champagne and watched.
"Turn," she said.
Tabitha turned.
"Smaller steps. You're a bride, not a marathon runner."
"Yes, Mama."
"Lillian, stop slouching."
"Sorry, Gwen," I said, and straightened.
It was the hardest word I had ever said with a smile on.
Tabitha caught my eye in the mirror for half a second, and looked away.
She had pressed her phone into my clutch an hour ago in the car, with a whisper.
Hold this. The dress has no pockets.
The screen was dark, but I had felt it buzz once against my hip, and I knew what that meant.
It was listening.
"Lillian," Gwen said. "A word."
