Chapter 18: Rehearsal

"She asked me to hold it," I said. "For pictures. The dress has no pockets."

Preston stared at the white light on the clasp.

His ears were red, but they had been red for a minute, and he had been drinking since noon.

"Pictures," he said.

"Of the veil. She wants them for Gwen."

"Lillian." He laughed, an ugly sound. "You're a terrible liar."

My heart stopped.

"You always were," he said. "You never could hold it back. It's why I loved you. You never had a face for it."

He picked up his glass again.

"Tabitha's phone, my God. She'd lose her head."

Then the satin curtain swished, and Tabitha came down the corridor in ivory silk, holding her skirt in both fists.

"Preston!" she cried. "You're not supposed to see the dress!"

"I didn't see the dress."

"You can see the hem. That's bad luck. Go."

She shoved him by the shoulders with one hand.

With the other she plucked her phone out of my clutch and thumbed it dark.

He went, laughing, with his glass.

When his footsteps were gone, Tabitha put her back against the wall and slid all the way down it.

"Did you get it?" I said.

"Four minutes and ten seconds," she whispered. "Every word."

Five weeks later we had the rehearsal dinner in a private room at the Halcyon.

I had expected to hate it, and I did.
