Chapter 19: The Morning
The morning of the twenty-second came up gray and cold, with a thin light on the window of the Halcyon.
Dal was already awake when I opened my eyes.
He was sitting on the edge of the bed in his shirtsleeves, tying his shoes, and his back looked like a wall.
"Call your mother," I said.
"I did, at five. Birdie's asleep. Mama says she'll keep her at the farm."
"Good."
"Lillian."
"Hm?"
"If any of this goes wrong," he said, "I'm not standing in the pew."
"You're standing in the pew."
"I'm going to want to come up there."
"Then come up there," I said, "but not before Tabitha plays it."
He turned and looked at me with his scarred eyebrow lifted, and almost smiled.
I kissed him once, hard, and went to find my dress.
The green one was waiting on the back of the door.
I put it on in front of the mirror and brushed out my hair.
I looked like a woman headed to a funeral with a very good plan.
