Chapter 15: Yes
We did not go to my apartment.
He drove us to the brewery with one hand on the wheel and the other on my knee.
I had to take my hair down in the car, because the clip had been pulled out in the elevator and I did not know where it went.
"You have cat hair on your tie," I said.
"I like it."
"It's Bishop's. He's an orange cat with a grudge."
"I'll wear it to bed."
"Don't be disgusting."
"You're laughing."
"Under protest."
Pretzel was at Liesl's, I remembered, because Emmett had dropped him off before the meeting.
We were alone.
The apartment was dark and quiet when we came in.
The only light came from the streetlamp outside the kitchen window.
He shut the door and stood against it, and watched me.
"Where do you want to start?" he said.
"I don't want to start."
"Jean."
"I want to be told I'm allowed to be here."
He crossed the floor.
He took my face in his hands, the way he had the first night, and tilted it up.
"You're allowed to be here," he said. "You're allowed anywhere I am. You're allowed to go tomorrow. You're allowed to stay forever. You're allowed to be angry at me for ten years."
"That's a lot of allowing."
"I'm good at it. I've been practicing."
I kissed him then, and it was different.
The first night had been a flood.
This was a choice, slow and deep and entirely mine.
He walked me back toward the bedroom with our mouths together, and I laughed against his lips when I bumped the kitchen table.
