Chapter 16: Whose Money
"Good morning," Liesl said. "Don't say anything yet."
I stood in Emmett's shirt on a frozen roof with bare feet.
She held out the check.
"I'm not here to buy you," she said. "I did enough of that."
I did not take it.
"This is the forty-one thousand," she said. "From my own account. I wrote it last night. It does not make anything right. It merely puts your money back where it belongs, so you can stop being owed."
"I'm not owed by you."
"You are, a little."
"I want it from him."
She looked at me for a long moment, and the wind pulled a strand of white hair across her cheek.
"I thought you might," she said.
"If I take it from you, then Cody wins. He gets sixty from you and forty-one from me, and I'm the one who got paid back by an old woman's checkbook. That's not what I want."
"What do you want?"
"I want him to put it in my hand. In front of people."
"Yes." She folded the check again and tucked it into her pocket. "I understand that. I was wrong to offer."
"You weren't wrong to want to."
"I was wrong to do a great many things." She took a breath. "May I say what I came to say?"
"Please."
"I'm sorry."
It was so plain, I almost didn't hear it.
She said it again.
"I am sorry. I did not ask you. I arranged you, like a table setting, because I was frightened for him and thought myself clever. I took a bad morning from you, and then I stood in a courthouse and watched you cope with it, and I was proud. That is the worst part."
