Chapter 17: The Tea

Odessa's house was a low white villa behind a hedge in Summerlin, ten minutes from the mansion where she held Sunday dinner.

A housekeeper let me in and took my coat.

Odessa waited in a small sitting room with a pot of tea and two cups.

She did not stand.

"Sit," she said. "It's a poor tea. I did not make it special."

I sat, and she poured, and neither of us touched the cups.

"You asked a question in the boardroom that I have wanted to ask for a year," she said.

"Which casino loans?"

"Yes. I did not have a single person at that table brave enough to say it."

"You could have said it."

"I am the trustee. I say it when I can prove it."

She set down the pot and looked at the window, where the hedge made a dark wall.

"I test every woman who comes near my nephew," she said. "You've guessed that."

"I figured it out at the soup."

"Did you?" Her mouth moved.

"I raised Rafferty from the age of twelve."

"His mother died in March, and by June his father had married a woman he met at a hotel bar."

I waited.

"The second Mrs. Wexley took a payment to leave five months after the wedding.

Her lawyer called it a settlement."

"That's awful."

"On her way out, she left a twelve-year-old boy standing alone at the curb of his grandmother's funeral, in his good suit, holding her coat."
