Chapter 17: After Close
Saturday night, at a quarter to one, the last cook went out the back door, and I turned the kitchen lights down to the steel.
Casa Lucchesi was shut, the chairs were on the tables, and my keys hung from the ring at my belt.
I had kept the restaurant open all night, with Teo outside the front door and two of Carmine's men in the alley.
Nobody was going to make me skip the close, not even a man with a rifle.
"You're counting again," Carmine said.
He was leaning on the pass-through with his bandaged arm in a black sling, in his shirtsleeves, watching me.
"I'm finishing."
"You've been finishing for an hour."
"You've been watching for an hour."
"I like to watch my wife work," he said.
I put the deposit bag on the counter.
I locked the office drawer and then the walk-in, and hung the key on the hook.
The jingle of the ring in the dark kitchen made something low in me pull tight.
"Come here," I said.
"Is that an order?"
"It's a request."
"I prefer orders," said Carmine, and came.
He stood in front of me with his good hand on the steel behind my hip.
We had not touched since the morning, and the whole day sat in my skin.
"I want to do something," I said.
"Tell me."
"I want to feed you."
He raised an eyebrow.
I went to the walk-in and came back with the bowl of mascarpone cream I had saved for the tiramisu.
It was cold, and sweet, and smelled of coffee and rum.
I dipped two fingers in it.
"Open."
He looked at my fingers, and then at my eyes.
He opened his mouth, and I put my fingers in, slowly.
