Chapter 18: Serafina Falls
I crossed the kitchen in my bra and my key belt and took the phone out of Serafina's hand.
She was so surprised that she let me.
"Give that back," she said.
"In a minute."
"Ottavio will have that video in ten seconds. The Don and his bride on a steel counter, the week before the vote."
"Then he'll want to see the rest of your phone too."
I swiped out of the camera.
The newest thing in her gallery, under the clip she had just made, was a video called "Elmwood, Oct."
It was fourteen minutes long.
I pressed play.
Ottavio's soft voice came out of the little speaker, and Serafina went white to her lips.
"Don't," she said. "That's private. That's mine."
"Then you shouldn't have made it."
I listened in silence.
Carmine had come to stand behind me with his good hand on my waist.
His jacket was over my shoulders, and I felt him go very still.
I held the phone up.
"Teo," I said.
Teo had come in at the sound of her voice, with his cup of seeds and his gun.
He looked at the three of us and the cream-streaked counter with enormous tact.
"Yes, signora."
"Send this to my phone, please. And then to yours."
He took Serafina's phone in his big hand and forwarded the file.
"She kept it as insurance," I said to Carmine. "In case Ottavio ever threw her away."
Serafina tried to snatch it back.
Teo moved his arm up, and she bounced off it.
Teo held out his hand to her, palm up.
"The key to the front door, signorina," he said.
She put it in his palm, and he dropped it into his seed cup.
She cried, then.
It was the first honest sound she had ever made in front of me.
On Sunday evening the Table sat in the dining room of Casa Lucchesi under strings of white lights.
