Chapter 14: The Gala

The two women were waiting in a glass conference room on the forty-first floor.

I came straight from the dental office in my scrubs.

Adam stood by the window, and he left the talking to them.

The older one slid the folder across the table.

"I worked for Evan for two years," she said. "I filed a complaint last spring."

"What happened?" I asked.

"I got a letter saying it was resolved. Then my accounts were reassigned and my bonus was cut."

The younger one kept her eyes on her hands.

"He told me my promotion depended on going to client dinners with him," she said. "Alone. I went to one. I have the texts he sent after."

I opened the folder.

There were screenshots, dates and a printed email chain, all in order.

At the bottom was a pink slip with the older woman's name on it.

"They let me go in August," she said. "Evan signed the paperwork."

"I'm sorry," I said.

"We're not asking for sorry." She looked at Adam, and then at me. "We saw you on that video. You said no to him in front of a crowd. We have never had a crowd."

"What do you want?"

"A chance to say it where he has to stand and hear it."

I turned to Adam.

He shook his head, very slightly.

"It's yours to say," he told them. "Not mine. Not hers."

I closed the folder and held it out to the older woman.

"Then you're not sitting at the back," I said. "You're sitting with me."

The Halden anniversary gala was in the grand ballroom of a downtown hotel, with four hundred guests and a string quartet.

I wore a dark green dress that I had paid for myself, and my own flat shoes.
