Chapter 15: Salesman of the Year
Evan took the trophy in both hands and held it up to the room.
"Thank you," he said into the microphone. "This means everything."
The ballroom applauded.
He smiled at table one, where Daphne was glowing.
"I'd like to thank my team, my mentors, and the woman who has been by my side through the hardest year of my life."
He looked straight at Daphne.
"She knows who she is."
At table four, the older woman put her napkin on the table and stood up.
She walked into the center aisle with her folder against her chest.
The quartet stopped in the middle of a bar.
"Excuse me," she said.
Her voice was not loud, and four hundred people heard it anyway.
"My name is on the Sales Division roster from two years ago. Evan Lacey was my director."
Evan's smile stayed fixed.
"Sit down," he said into the mic, and the speakers caught it. "This isn't the time."
"Last spring I filed a complaint about him with HR," she said. "I was told it was resolved. A month later I was reassigned, and in August he signed my termination."
A murmur ran across the tables.
The younger woman stood beside her.
"He told me I'd lose my promotion if I didn't come to dinner alone," she said. "I have the texts."
She held her phone up above her head.
A man at table seven said, "Is this real?"
"Every page of it is real," the older woman said. "And nobody read it."
Evan dropped the microphone back onto its stand.
"These are lies. They are bitter employees. I have a spotless record."
"You had a record," said a voice from the head table.
It was Adam.
He stood and walked toward the stage with his hands at his sides.
