Chapter 26: The Muster
The first Muster of the Miami-Dade Deputies began at dawn on Saturday, February 20.
It was held in the Hialeah Park grandstand lot, where the slabback had walked through the gun show four months earlier.
The word was Crandall's.
He said that when a Guard wants its people in one place with their gear, it is a muster.
He said a rally is for politicians.
Within half an hour the line ran around the pink-and-white grandstand and out past the flamingos on the infield.
Abuela had set up at the head of it.
She had brought the register.
It sat on a folding table with a cash drawer, a coffee urn, a stack of receipt paper and a pen on a chain.
Every person who wanted to be on the Roll paid $1.25, which bought a cafecito and a line in my grandmother's hand.
She wrote each name on a receipt, with the date, and she kept the receipt in a shoebox.
I asked her why she did not use a spreadsheet.
"A spreadsheet does not get a cafecito," said Abuela.
I stopped asking.
By nine she had written 612 names.
Joelle came at eight, in jeans, and stood in the line like anyone else.
When she reached the table, Abuela held the pen out to her, and Joelle looked at it.
"I don't sign things," she said.
"I did not ask you to sign," said my grandmother. "I will write it."
Joelle thought about that for a good five seconds.
"Write it," she said, and Abuela wrote it on a receipt and tore it off.
