Chapter 27: Key Largo

The Key Largo gate opened at dawn on Saturday, March 6, on the reef flat off Mile Marker 98.

It was a hundred and forty yards from the place where Joelle's partner had died.

She had told me that the night before, standing at the rail of the response boat with her arms folded.

The flat was a sheet of clear green water over white sand, knee-deep in places and waist-deep in others.

It ran out for a half mile before it dropped away.

The gray disc spread across it like a lid.

The Inside, when I read it from the boat, was the flat as the state had surveyed it in 1953.

There was no mooring or buoy on it.

It was empty except for the sand, and the eight tide-walkers that stood on it in a row, and the Warden.

[Warden. Class III. Health 6,600 of 6,600.]

[Seam: sealed. Warrant required.]

[Condition: Waiting.]

The Warden stood in the shallows with the water at its knees, looking out to sea.

I had read the Terms on bullets, and none of them said what a bullet does when it has to go through the sea.

I knew from the Bay.

A round loses its punch in a foot of water, signed or not.

A Warrant passes a Warden's seal, but it does not pass the Atlantic.

Joelle looked at the Warden for a long time.

"His knees," she said. "The Seam on this one is at the knee, and the water's over it."

"Yes."

"When's the tide?"

I had the table in my backpack, because I always do.
