Chapter 15: The Care Home

Nobody in the showroom moved.

Brady stood on the floor between us with his GENERAL MANAGER badge crooked on his chest.

My mother came down the last two steps.

"You think I'm ashamed?" she said. "I am not ashamed of one thing I've done. I protected this family's name."

"You wrote a lie for a gossip site."

"I wrote what the board needs to hear. That my daughter met a rich man on the street and married him in a day." She tilted her head. "Tell me which part is a lie, Katie."

The salesmen were all looking at their shoes.

"How much is he paying you?" Quinton said from behind me.

It was the first thing he'd said since we came in.

My mother turned to him with her party smile.

"That's between Raymond and me, son."

"Don't call him son," I said.

"I'll call him what I like. I'm going to be his mother-in-law for about four more days." She put on her reading glasses and looked at her phone like we'd already left. "You should go home, Katie. You'll want to check on your grandmother."

The floor went cold under my feet.

"What did you do?"

She didn't look up.

"Somebody had to. She fell in November. She leaves the stove on. She threw a casserole at me."

"She put a casserole on a mat."
