Chapter 16: Scar

"Take Nana to the car," I said.

"Katie," said Quinton.

"Please, Quin. Take her to the car."

Nana looked at the black car, and at me, and at the man with the scar.

"You go on," she said to me. "I'll watch from the Buick with my cane."

Quinton walked her to the Buick.

He didn't take his eyes off the man for one second the whole way.

I crossed three rows of parking lot.

The families from the lobby were coming out behind me, buttoning coats, carrying cookie tins and empty casserole dishes.

The man in the gray overcoat watched me come.

He didn't uncross his arms.

Up close he was bigger than I remembered.

The scar went straight through the eyebrow and on up into his hairline, white and old.

"Mrs. Stuyvesant," he said. "Help you?"

I held up my phone with the November photo on the screen.

Then I raised it higher, next to his face, and took a second picture.

The flash went off in the bright noon.

He blinked.

"What are you doing?"

"Comparing." I turned the screen around and looked at both photos side by side. "November, Lower Wacker Drive. December, a care home in Tyler. Same coat. Same eyebrow."
