Chapter 6: Two Million

"You must be Kathleen," Raymond said, and held out his gloved hand.

I didn't take it.

He smiled and put the hand back in his pocket.

"Let me buy you both a coffee," he said. "It's cold, and we're family now."

"No," said Quinton.

"Yes," I said.

Quinton looked at me.

"I want to hear what he has to say," I said. "In public. With people watching."

The café on the corner of the square had a booth by the window with a view of the whole market.

Raymond took the side facing the door.

Quinton sat beside me, close, his thigh hard against mine under the table.

Raymond ordered three coffees and a slice of chess pie he didn't touch.

"I'll be quick," he said. "My nephew has been ill. I don't know what he's told you, Kathleen, but a healthy man doesn't leave a billion-dollar company to sleep under a bridge for six months."

"He told me why he did it."

"I'm sure he did." Raymond's voice was so gentle. "He has a story for everything. That's part of the illness."

Quinton said nothing.

His hand was flat on the table, perfectly still.

"Here is my offer." Raymond took a folded check from his coat and laid it in front of me, face up.

Two million dollars.

Made out to Kathleen Verrill, in blue ink, already signed.

"An annulment," Raymond said. "You fly back to Chicago tomorrow and forget all this. You can open your own bakery. Ten bakeries."

"Why do you care who he's married to?"

"Because he only married you for one reason, my dear." He tilted his head kindly. "On January second, the board decides if Quinton is fit to run his grandfather's company. A man who vanished into the street does not look fit. A man who comes back with a wife looks like a man with a life. You are a prop."
