Chapter 7: Christmas Eve
He told me that night, in the dark, with my head on his shoulder.
The man with the scar had come down the ledge kicking boots.
He'd crouched in front of Quinton and asked his name.
Quinton gave him a fake one.
The man had looked at the beard and the cap and the filthy coat, and he hadn't recognized the face under them.
He'd kicked him twice anyway.
"Then he leaned down," Quinton said, "and said, 'If you ever run into Quinton Stuyvesant, tell him his uncle sends his love.'"
I lay there with my hand on the place where the ribs had broken.
"He didn't know it was you."
"He didn't know it was me."
"Raymond sent a man to kick people until one of them was you."
"Yes."
I didn't sleep much after that.
On Christmas Eve, at seven o'clock, I walked into my mother's party in the red dress.
Not the green velvet.
The red one, with my own heels and his mother's ring, and my husband on my arm.
The house was full.
The Rose Club women in their sequined jackets, the deacons from First Methodist, the bank president, two county commissioners, a retired judge, and half the people I went to high school with.
A string trio played carols by the twelve-foot tree.
Every head in the front room turned when we came in.
Quinton was in the thrift suit with a fresh white shirt and the tie I'd bought.
He'd shaved again.
He looked like a movie star who'd lost a bet.
My mother saw us from across the room and her face went white under her makeup.
She didn't come over.
She smiled very hard at the bank president instead.
"Well," said a woman's voice at my elbow. "So this is him."
It was the Rose Club treasurer, who had once told me in seventh grade that my thighs were "sturdy".
