Chapter 7: Brianna's Pie

I didn't sleep.

I lay on my mother's quilt in the dark and kept seeing Kellan's forearm.

The tendon had stood out in it while he held himself still.

At six I gave up and made coffee on the camp stove.

At seven a small car came over the Cold Creek bridge and stopped at the edge of my yard.

Brianna got out with a pie.

She stayed exactly where the gravel ended and held the plate against her chest.

"May I come up?"

"You can stand there."

"That's fair." She smiled. "Blueberry. It's from Vernon's recipe. I got up at five."

The old dog was on the porch step, and he stood up slowly and began to growl.

It was a low continuous sound, and Brianna looked at him for a long moment.

"He's old," she said kindly. "I think he's confused."

"He's not confused."

"Devon." She said my whole name, which she had never done. "I'm so sorry about yesterday."

I waited.

"I should have woken you on those steps. I knew you were there, and I didn't, and I've felt sick about it since. I didn't want you to hear it from anyone else."

It was a good apology.

It was warm, and it had a catch in it at the right place.

I'd have believed it a week ago.

"Okay," I said.

"Dane isn't himself." She came a step closer, and then she stopped, because I'd looked at the line of gravel. "He saw you last night. By the creek. He walked back to the packhouse and he hasn't said a word since."

"What did he see?"

"You tell me." Her eyes moved over my face, bright and quick. "He said you were white."
