Chapter 8: The Terms
Kellan came back at six that evening with a cooler and a bag of tools.
"You don't have a refrigerator," he said.
"I have a creek."
"You have a creek with a bear in it. I saw the tracks."
He set a dozen eggs, a pound of bacon and a block of butter on my mother's counter and stood there with his hands on his hips, waiting for me to object.
I didn't.
I had not eaten since a stale granola bar on the ridge.
He cooked on my camp stove with his sleeves pushed to the elbow, and the old dog sat at his feet and watched the bacon with total devotion.
"Traitor," I told the dog.
The dog ignored me.
We ate on the porch steps with our plates on our knees while the light went orange and the creek talked to itself.
"I need terms," I said.
"Go ahead."
"You're going to want to help. You're going to drive me, and you'll stand behind me, and you'll want to say something clever to Vernon." I put my fork down. "One. No Alpha voice, ever. If you use it on me, I leave."
"I wouldn't."
"I know you wouldn't. I'm saying it out loud so it's a rule."
"Done."
"Two. I don't owe Highridge one more night. Not a morning, not a favor. If I go up that mountain tomorrow it's for a signature."
"Done."
"Three." I stopped.
He waited.
"Whatever you find out about them," I said slowly, "you tell me. The same day. Even if it's ugly. Even if you think I can't take it."
He looked at me for a long moment.
"That one costs me something," Kellan said.
