Chapter 10: Full Moon
The moon rose full that night, enormous and white over the pines.
Bascombe's letter lay unopened in my desk drawer, where I had put it to wait until after supper.
I was copying a treaty in the Old Hand when every wolf in Greyholt began to sing.
It starts low, in the lower halls, and climbs the stairs.
I had heard it for four years, the long chorus that comes on a full moon night, and I had never minded it.
That night it went through me.
Someone knocked on my door.
It was a hard knock, a single one.
I opened it, and Percival stood in the hall with both hands braced on the doorframe.
His eyes were wrong.
The amber had gone bright and strange, ringed with gold that caught the lamp, and his pupils were huge.
His hair was loose.
His shirt was open at the throat, and I could see the pulse hammering in it.
"Lock this door," Percival said. His voice was a rasp. "Lock it behind me and do not open it until the sun is up."
"Why?"
"The moon." He swallowed. "The wolf is very near the skin tonight. I have lived with it for three hundred years, and I have never wanted anything the way it wants you."
"Tell me what it wants."
"June."
"Answer me."
He shut his eyes, and his knuckles whitened on the frame.
The thread on his wrist blazed.
"It wants to take you," he said, as though every word was pulled from him. "It wants to put you on the floor and hold you down and have you until you scream. It wants to bite. It does not know how to be gentle."
My whole body went hot.
I thought about the nights I had spent in this room, alone, listening to that chorus.
