Chapter 11: The Linen Closet
I read Bascombe's letter at seven the next morning, standing in the east corridor with Percival looking over my shoulder.
It was written in a beautiful hand on cream paper.
It offered me two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
It offered a house in Albany, a pension, and a post as head of a university library.
It required me to be gone before midwinter night.
At the bottom, in smaller writing, was a single paragraph.
"Mrs. Dunn's appointment as housekeeper of Greyholt is the Council's to renew, and the Council meets in three weeks. I should be sorry to see so loyal a servant in difficulties."
I read that part aloud.
My voice shook with something that was not fear.
Percival said nothing.
I turned my head, and the hair rose on my arms.
His eyes had gone gold again.
It was a flat, cold, terrible gold, and it filled the entire eye.
"He will not touch her," Percival said very quietly.
"Percival."
"I will break that cane over his head. I will take that ring off his hand, finger and all, and put it in the Council's soup."
"Is that true?"
"All of it is true. That is the difficulty." His voice dropped to a growl. "I want to do far worse."
The wall behind him was lined with the narrow doors of the linen rooms.
