Chapter 13: The Door
I read Shelby's text twice, and then I turned the phone face down on the table.
"What does it say?" Nolan asked.
"That Broderick's coming home. That I'm supposed to put the ring back on."
"Are you going to?"
"I'm going to sit down."
I sat on the arm of his sofa, and he stayed standing in the middle of the room.
We had moved from the hall without deciding to.
The lamp was low, and my old letters sat tied with twine on the desk behind him.
"Say the thing you've been holding back," I said.
"I haven't been."
"You've been holding it since the truck."
He rubbed his face, hard.
"All right," he said. "You married a stranger."
"Excuse me?"
"Three weeks, Hannah. He came home, and you had dinner twice, and you stood in a courthouse in a borrowed dress. Not once did you ask him a question that only the man who wrote the letters could answer."
"That's not fair."
"It's the only thing I've been angry about."
"You're angry at me?"
"I'm angry that you didn't test it." His voice was rough. "I wrote you eight months of sentences, and when he sat across the table and said nothing, you called it tiredness. You never once asked why the man talking didn't match the man writing."
I stood.
"Because I trusted him," I said. "Because I was lonely and I trusted somebody I thought was kind. Don't you dare make that my crime."
"I'm not."
"You are. And you want to know what I'm angry about? You sat at the back of that room. You could have spoken up."
