Chapter 14: Nolan's POV

Nolan's POV

I woke before the light with her hair across my chest and the whole weight of the night sitting quietly in my ribs.

She was asleep on her stomach, one hand under the pillow, her mouth open a little.

I did not move.

I had read her handwriting for eight months, and I had never once pictured it breathing.

On the desk across the room, the twine-tied letters sat in a gray square of window.

Her ring lay on top of them.

I should have been afraid.

Broderick was in the air, and he was coming for what he called his.

Instead I lay there and felt grateful in a way that frightened me more.

Her eyes opened.

"You're staring," she said into the pillow.

"I am."

"It's creepy."

"I've waited a long time to be allowed."

She turned over, and the sheet slid down, and the first sun touched her shoulder.

She looked at me for a while without speaking.

Then she traced the line of my jaw with one finger, and I forgot what I had been about to say.

"Come here," she said.

I came.

I kissed her slowly this time, with none of last night's anger.

She sighed into my mouth and hooked her leg over my hip.

I kissed down her throat and over her collarbone, and she arched when my mouth closed over her nipple.

I took my time.

I worked my way down her stomach with my lips and my hands.

She tangled her fingers in my hair and whispered my name like a question.
