Chapter 16: Shelby's Move

The spouses' coffee was held on Thursday in the squadron's family room, under a banner that said Welcome Home.

I went because Jo said, "If you skip it she wins."

Also the Captain's wife had asked me, kindly, to sit near her.

Twelve women were in the room, and Shelby stood at the front with a folder and a laptop.

She did not look at me when I came in.

She waited until the coffee was poured and the pastries were out.

Then she said, in her warmest voice, "Ladies, I need to share something with real care."

My stomach dropped.

"A concern has been brought to me about one of our own. I want to say first that I have no judgment. But we have a duty to each other."

She turned the laptop around.

On the screen was a photograph, grainy, taken from across a road.

It showed Nolan's truck at the foot of the lighthouse, in the rain, with two shapes in the front seat.

"This was posted by someone walking a dog," Shelby said. "It's been shared. I felt we should address it before it spreads. Lieutenant Commander Fitch is Lieutenant Loomis's closest friend. And Hannah is, in every legal sense, his wife."

A ripple went through the room.

I heard the word adultery from somewhere in the back, whispered, and a chair creaked.

Heat climbed my neck.

I had been ready for a hundred cruelties.

I had not been ready for a stranger's photograph of my own mouth on someone else's.
