Chapter 18: The Ring

Broderick asked to meet on Friday at a coffee shop in Coronado, and I said yes on one condition.

Jo came with me.

She sat at the next table with a croissant and a paperback she did not read, wearing sunglasses indoors.

"If he touches you," she said, "I will bite him."

"He won't touch me."

"I'm a pediatric nurse. I know where to bite."

Broderick was already at the corner table when I walked in.

A legal folder sat squared in front of him, beside two cups of tea.

He had remembered I liked jasmine.

I noticed that I didn't care.

"Han." He stood. "Thank you for coming."

"You said you had a proposal."

"I did." He sat. "I want to be honest with you."

"That would be new."

He took it on the chin, with a rueful half-smile.

"I deserve that. So here it is, plainly. I need this dinner to go well. The board decides in a week, and a lot rides on it. I'll make it worth your time."

He slid the folder across the table.

I opened it.

It was a typed agreement, two pages, on plain paper.

I read it slowly.

If I attended the Captain's dinner as his wife, wearing my ring, he would sign the divorce papers the Monday after the board.

I also had to say nothing about the orders, the form, or the lighthouse.

He would pay off my remaining student loans.

He would put my name on a savings account.
