Chapter 20: Nolan's POV
Nolan's POV
I had promised her I would stand up when he read it.
I had my hands flat on the tablecloth, and my weight on my heels, and I was waiting for the first line.
It came out of Broderick in my own cadence.
I heard the pause I had put after lamp, and the small drop I had put before the gray sea.
It sounded like someone wearing my voice as a costume.
There is a thing you can see from the end of a long table that you cannot see from the middle.
I saw it because the pillar hid me from the Captain, and nobody was looking at me.
I saw Shelby's leather folder open an inch on her lap.
She had angled it away from the table, and she had slid it halfway toward Broderick's empty chair when he first stood.
Inside it was a single sheet in her small upright hand.
I could read it from where I sat. I have always had good eyes.
At the top it said, Handle.
Under it was a column of first names.
Hannah's was first, circled twice.
Beside it Shelby had written, Contain until board. Spouse group. Manager call done.
Under that, my name, with a line drawn from it to a second note.
Fitch. Conduct, after the board. Let B. file.
