Chapter 21: Public Fall
Hannah's POV
The Captain turned the first page of the folder with one blunt finger.
Nobody at the table breathed.
"Mrs. Loomis," he said, without looking up. "You'll forgive me. I wanted to hear you finish that before I said anything."
"Yes, sir."
"Lieutenant Loomis. Sit down."
Broderick sat.
He still held his phone, and the screen had gone dark in his hand.
"I have here an emergency contact sheet," the Captain said. "Filed with the squadron, signed by you, dated before the wedding."
He held it up so the room could see the page.
The line for Spouse / Primary was empty.
The first name under Secondary was Shelby's.
"Your wife does not appear," the Captain said. "Your former fiancee does."
A murmur crawled down the table.
Shelby sat very straight, her hands on her closed folder, her face the color of paper.
"Sir," she said. "That's a long-standing formality. We're colleagues."
"Lieutenant Commander." He did not raise his voice. "You'll have your turn."
He turned the next page.
"Orders to Diego Garcia. Submitted five weeks before Lieutenant Loomis proposed to a woman he told, in writing, that he'd be at a shore billet. Endorsed by the squadron's family readiness officer, who then spent a month telling that same woman he was a good man."
The room had stopped moving.
"A welfare report," he said, "dated the Thursday before I knocked on this couple's door. It describes Mrs. Loomis as unstable. It recommends she be watched. It predicts, in writing, that she would make a scene."
