Chapter 22: Signing

The Captain's study smelled of pipe tobacco and old leather.

The guests had gone, and the long table stood empty under the chandelier.

Broderick sat in the chair in front of the desk, hands on his knees.

He looked like a boy outside a principal's office.

I stood by the window with the manila folder I had carried onto the flight line.

The Captain's wife stood next to me and did not say a word.

"Mrs. Loomis," the Captain said. "You have papers."

"Yes, sir."

"Put them on the desk."

I did.

The corner of the folder was bent, and a coffee ring had dried on the cover.

The tab I had marked in ink was still where I'd left it.

"Lieutenant." The Captain took off his glasses. "Your wife has asked for a signature on a legal document. I'm not a judge. I'm a man who is going to watch you do the right thing, or watch you do the wrong thing in front of me. You choose."

Broderick looked at the pen.

For a while, nothing in the room moved.

"If I sign," he said, "do I keep the posting?"

"No."

"Do I keep the board?"

"No."

"Then what do I get?"

"The chance to be a man who didn't make her ask twice," said the Captain.

Broderick laughed, once.

Then he took the pen, and flipped to the tab, and signed.

His handwriting was exactly as I remembered it from the marriage license, upright and neat.
