Chapter 23: Earned

On Monday morning I was charting at the station when Jo said, quietly, "Don't look up."

I looked up.

Nolan stood at the end of the corridor in his khakis.

His cover was under his arm and his hands were empty.

No flowers. No envelope. No folded page.

I had been braced for a letter for weeks, and for once he had brought none.

Jo took the pen out of my fingers.

"I'm taking your break," she said. "Go. I'll watch your kids."

I walked down the hall to him.

The family lounge was empty at that hour.

A vending machine hummed against one wall, and a rack of picture books stood by the window.

He stood in the middle of the carpet like a man at attention.

Then, as if he heard himself, he made himself relax.

"I told you I'd answer the question," he said.

"You said I didn't have to answer yours."

"Mine was what I owe you. I've been up since four. I think I know what the answer is, and I want to say it out loud."

"Then say it."

"Without paper."

"Without paper."

He swallowed.

"I put words in another man's mouth," he said. "I sent them to you for eight months. I read your replies at night and I fell in love with you in a bunk room, and I never said a single true thing to you with my own name on it."

The vending machine clicked.
