Chapter 4: Casserole

Shelby arrived at Jo's door at six with a casserole dish wrapped in a towel.

I knew it was her before I opened the door, because nobody else in my life had ever knocked in a rhythm.

"I know," she said, before I could speak. "You don't want to see me. I wouldn't, either. But you shouldn't have to eat toast for dinner."

She held out the dish.

It smelled like cheese and garlic and a kitchen in a better life.

Jo, behind me on the couch, said very quietly, "Do not let her in."

I let her in.

I had been lonelier than I wanted to admit, and I was tired of being right.

Shelby stood in the doorway of the tiny living room in off-duty jeans.

Her dark hair was loose for the first time since I had met her.

"I owe you an apology," she said. "I should have told you the orders were coming. I thought it was Broderick's place, and I let it be his place. That was a mistake."

"You signed them."

"I sign a hundred a month, Hannah. It's my job." She said it so gently that I almost believed it. "Let me help. Let me go to the unit with you and pack your boxes, so you never have to see him there."

"She doesn't need your help," Jo said.

"I do, a little," I said.

I didn't want to walk into that kitchen alone.

Jo glared, and then, because she loved me, she grabbed her keys.

The unit looked the same as it had on the morning I left.
