Chapter 5: The Hangar
The flight line at North Island smelled of jet fuel and cut grass and other people's goodbyes.
By nine on Friday morning the families had gathered behind a white rope, mothers with strollers and girls in matching T-shirts that said Bring Daddy Home.
I wore my good navy dress and flat shoes, and I carried a manila folder.
Jo had wanted to come.
I had asked her to stay near the gate with her phone ready, in case I needed a witness who wasn't wearing a uniform.
The squadron stood in ranks on the concrete, seabags at their feet.
Broderick was in the third row, in his flight suit, looking straight ahead.
He found me anyway.
I watched him see the folder, and I watched him decide to smile.
The Captain stepped forward to say a few words, and when he finished, the ranks broke into hugs.
That was the moment I had waited for.
I ducked under the rope.
A few of the spouses turned. One of them whispered, and the whisper traveled.
By the time I reached Broderick, half the line was watching me.
"Han," he said softly. "You came."
"I came to give you this."
I held out the folder.
His hand did not rise to take it.
"Not here," he said.
"Here is the only place you're not charming."
Somebody laughed, a young sailor, and then stopped.
Broderick looked past me at the crowd, and his voice dropped to the tone he used on commanders.
"You want to do this in front of the whole squadron? Right before I deploy?"
