Chapter 20: Shutters Open
Astrid's POV
The water was hot and the air was freezing, and steam rose off both of us into the afternoon sun.
I sat on his lap in the tub on the back deck, facing him, with my arms around his neck.
I had walked up the dock at one o'clock in daylight, past three neighbors, and I had not looked down once.
Now I could see everything.
The sun lay on the lake, and on his wet shoulders, and on the gray in his hair.
Across the water the Aurora Bridge stood up black against a hard blue sky.
"Your eyes are green," I said.
"They're gray."
"In the sun they're green."
I kissed him.
His mouth was hot and tasted of coffee, and his hands came up my back under the water.
He held me still against him and kissed me slowly, and there was nothing else in the day to do.
His hands slid down to my ass and squeezed, and I bit his lower lip and pulled.
"You're going to ruin me in daylight," he said.
"That's the plan."
There was a droning in the sky, and then it grew.
A yellow seaplane came down over the roofs of the houseboats with its floats out, so low that I felt the sound in my teeth.
It touched the lake with a long white wake and ran toward the south shore.
I laughed against his mouth.
"They can see us," I said.
"Probably."
"Do you care?"
"No," he said. "Do you?"
I reached down between us under the water and wrapped my hand around him.
He was hard already, thick and hot in my fist.
I stroked him slowly, with the bracelet on his wrist brushing my arm.
His hand came between my legs under the water, and two fingers slid into me, easy and deep.
I gasped and rocked on them.
"You're ready," he said.
"I've been ready since the gate."
He thumbed my clit in slow circles, and I tightened my fist on him, and we stayed like that, stroking each other in the steam, until neither of us could talk.
