Chapter 19: The Date on the Page
"Forged," I said.
"By Fergus Caffrey," my father said. He lifted his voice for the line of bikes. "He's had fifteen years in a cell to practice my hand."
"It's your H, Da."
"Anyone can copy a letter."
"Then you won't mind who else says it isn't."
I turned my head.
The oldest of the old men stepped up beside me and took off his cap.
The Wolves knew his face.
A murmur ran down the line, and two of the men on the bikes sat up straight.
"Hello, Tom," he said.
"That's Fergus's oldest man," someone said.
"I'm here to say what I saw," the old man said. "The night of the warehouse, fifteen years ago. I was on the road behind. I saw Tom Callister come out the side door with a pistol and wipe it down on his shirt."
"He's lying."
"I saw him put it under the seat of Fergus's truck."
"He's a liar and a dead man's friend."
"I've lived on that for fifteen years," the old man said. "I took a seat from you after, and a place for my girl. She's in the ground now. I'm not afraid of you anymore."
The road captain climbed off his bike.
He was the oldest of the Wolves, a heavy man with a white mustache, and he looked at my father as if he had never seen him.
"Tom," he said. "Is that your hand?"
"It's a copy."
"I rode with you for twenty years. Don't make me ask a second time."
I raised my voice, so the whole road heard.
"The date on the page is the third of June," I said. "Three days before my graduation. If you didn't write it, who carried it?"
Nobody answered.
Then a boy in a prospect's cut walked out of the line with his helmet in his hands.
He was young and thin, and his hands were shaking.
He wore a Wolves prospect's cut, and his eyes would not meet my father's.
