Chapter 20: The Ring on the Table
Cian stood with his arms spread and his back to me, and the gun stood level at his heart.
"Move, son," my father said.
"No, sir."
"I'm not asking."
"Then you'll have to shoot me." His voice shook. "You said wait, and I waited, and I'll never forgive that. I'm not waiting now."
"Cian."
"Put it down, Wolf."
My father's eyes did not leave his face.
The finger on the trigger tightened a little, and I saw it.
A heavy hand came down on my father's wrist from the side.
It was Cian's father, the sergeant-at-arms, a thick gray man I had known all my life.
He had come across the road without a sound.
He bent my father's arm back and took the pistol out of his fingers, and then he put the muzzle against the back of my father's neck.
"I told you once," he said, rough and low. "You hurt my boy, I bury you."
"You wouldn't."
"Try me."
The pistol hung there.
Nobody on the whole road breathed.
Then the road captain walked up and laid one hand on the sergeant's arm.
"Not here," he said. "Not on their ground. We do it the club's way."
The sergeant lowered the gun.
He did it slowly, and he did not take his eyes off my father.
They set the table in the road.
It was Fergus's kitchen table, long and scarred, carried out through the gate by four men who didn't speak.
The Wolves stood on one side, with the Caffrey men on the other, and Niall and I at the end.
My father sat alone in the middle chair, with his hands flat on the wood.
The road captain stood.
"Every man here has heard it," he said. "Fifteen years of Fergus's life went to Tom Callister's chair. And when Fergus came out and gave him a way to put it right, he sold his own daughter to keep that chair."
