Chapter 21: Dominic's POV: His Answer

Dominic's POV

I held her hand at the altar rail for a moment before I remembered there were two hundred people watching.

"Come with me," I said.

I took her through the side door to the vestry, where the choir robes hung on a rail and the light came in through one stained window.

She leaned against the table in the ivory dress and looked at me.

"Say it," she said.

"My answer."

"Yes."

I had practiced it on the drive to the church, and in the shower, and at my father's grave.

None of it came out the way I had practiced.

"Two years ago, my mother wrote to me in Lisbon," I said. "She said a good girl was waiting and I should come and meet her. I thought it was an insult. I thought I was saying no to a cage."

"Dom..."

"Let me. I never read your name. I never saw your face. If I had walked into that dining room and seen you sitting at the table with your father, I would have stayed." I swallowed. "I'd have been late. I'd have been awkward. But I would have stayed, and I'd have asked you to dinner a second time."

She said nothing.

Her eyes were full.

"That's my answer," I said. "It's yes. It would have been yes then. It's yes now."

"You don't know that."

"I know it because I met you in a bar and I didn't know your name or your life, and by the second drink I'd decided I would follow you anywhere you wanted to go."
