Chapter 11: The Boxes
By one o'clock on Saturday we had packed nine boxes, and he had not yet opened the door to his old room.
I opened it for him.
It was a narrow room at the back of his mother's house in Cuyler-Brownville.
It had a window onto the neighbor's yard, a closet with no door, and a single iron bed stripped to the mattress.
The sun came in thick with dust.
Somewhere next door a radio played an old soul song, and a screen door banged.
Brendan stood in the doorway with his hands hanging.
"I haven't been in here since I was nineteen," he said.
"Come in," I said.
"Belle."
"Come in with me."
He came in.
I closed the door and took his face in both hands.
"Tell me something you've never said," I said. "To anyone. Just one thing. Not a past, just a thing."
He looked at me for a long moment, and I felt him decide.
"I've never brought anyone here," he said. "I didn't think anyone would want to come."
"I want to," I said.
"I know."
"Tell me another."
"I was afraid in this room every night," he said slowly, "that I'd end up my father. Or end up nothing. Both of those were the same to me."
I kissed him.
I kissed him slowly, and he kissed me back hard.
I felt the shake in his hands as he drew my sweater over my head.
He undressed me in the dusty gold light.
There was no hurry in him at all.
He kissed my collarbone, my shoulder, the soft part of my stomach, and each place he kissed he stopped and stayed.
