"My mother got this in the mail," Brendan said, "and she never told me."

He sat on the floor of his boyhood room in his jeans, with the quilt around his hips.

The plastic bracelet lay in his open palm.

The printing on it was faded.

I could read it from where I knelt.

"Brendan," I said.

"Give me a minute."

I gave him a minute.

The radio next door had stopped, and a mockingbird was going through its songs in the pecan tree outside the window.

"I told you no pasts," he said, "and now I'm going to break it, because this one's got your name on it as much as mine."

"Mine?"

"You're the one who's here."

I sat back on my heels and waited.

"I was nineteen," he said. "My father had died three years before, and my mother worked the line in a school cafeteria, and I unloaded ships. There was a girl from a family that owned half of River Street. She used to come down to the docks to watch her father's cargo come in."
