Chapter 14: Motion of No Confidence
Noah did not let him in.
He took the jar from Cassian's arms, set it on the landing floor between their feet, and pushed it back with one shoe.
"Keep it," Noah said. "You'll need the room."
"I don't know what to say to you."
"Then don't say it to me yet." Noah looked past him, down the stairs. "Your parents don't know about the plan. You told your mother about the video. You didn't tell her you agreed to it."
"How do you know that?"
"Because she asked me in the kitchen if it could be fixed, and she said it like a woman who doesn't know what it is."
Cassian looked at the jar.
"Go home," Noah said. "Tell them all of it, in a full sentence. Then send me what they say."
"What they say?"
"I'd like to know what the people who raised you think about it."
He closed the door softly. It was worse than if he had slammed it.
Cassian carried the jar home on the bus with the twenty on top, and a man across the aisle asked if it was pickles.
"No," Cassian said. "It's an apology."
"Is it working?"
"It's early."
At the Haverstock house the dining room was already set.
His mother sat at one end with her notebook, and his father at the other with a fork he had not raised yet.
Both of them looked at the jar, and neither said a word.
"I need to call a special item," Cassian said.
"Granted," said his mother, and wrote down the time.
He did not sit.
He told it standing up, with his hands on the back of the chair, in the plainest sentences he had.
He told them the plan from the start, and halfway through his father set down the fork he had not raised and did not pick it up again.
