Chapter 15: The Question Paper

The text from Norman came in at ten past eight on Wednesday, while Cassian was brushing his teeth.

Norman: Check your tutor's bag, Cass. Stats building, back stairs. Happy for you.

Cassian spat, and read it again, and did not say sure to the mirror.

Another message arrived under it, from a number he had saved as Class Group.

It was a photo of a printed test paper with STATISTICS 201, RETAKE, THURSDAY across the top and the answers circled in red.

Under the photo, someone anonymous had written: found in the bag of the guy who tutors the Haverstock kid. Funny, right?

Cassian was out of the house in his socks and his father's coat.

He ran the whole ten minutes to campus, and a golden retriever on the Haverstock lawn barked after him once in encouragement.

The back stairs of the Statistics building smelled of floor wax and radiators.

On the second landing a canvas tote hung from the rail, and the green zipper of it was open.

Norman stood next to it with a folded paper in one hand.

"Cass," he said warmly. "You came fast."

"Put it down."

"I'm just returning a thing that fell out of his bag."

"It didn't fall out. It's never been in it." Cassian climbed the last steps and stopped one below him. "You printed the answers. You put them in. You sent the picture to the whole class. Put it down."

"And who's going to believe you?" Norman said gently. "You say sure to the pizza guy. You said sure to a dean about a bully. Everybody knows what your sure is worth."

It landed exactly where he had meant it to.

Cassian felt his face go hot.

He thought of the cook, and the goat cheese, and four years of eggs.

Then he took the paper out of Norman's hand.

"No," he said.

"No what?"

"No, I'm not giving it back. And no, you don't get to say what my word is worth." His voice shook and he let it. "It cost me a dollar a time, and I paid every one of them."
