Chapter 4: The Yes Jar

Norman's text sat unanswered on Cassian's phone all night, and by breakfast on Tuesday there was a second one under it.

Norman: Friday. Don't make me ask twice.

Cassian turned the phone face down beside his plate.

The cook asked him if he wanted eggs, and Noah put down his fork to watch.

"Sure," Cassian said.

"Poached or scrambled?"

"Sure."

"With the goat cheese?"

"Sure."

The plate came, and it had goat cheese on it. Cassian hated goat cheese.

Noah slid the jar across the table without a word.

Cassian put in three dollars, and the retriever lifted his head to count them.

"I can't tell her I don't like it," Cassian said. "She's been making it for four years."

"She's been making it because you said yes for four years."

"That's a reason, then."

"It's a very sad reason." Noah pulled the plate toward himself and ate the goat cheese off the top. "Tomorrow you say the thing you want in a full sentence. Then you can have it."

"What if I don't know what I want?"

"Then the jar gets rich."

Statistics lasted until four.

Noah taught the way he did everything else, flatly and in order.

He put a question on the page, waited, and said why? to every answer, including the right ones.

By two o'clock Cassian had said "because the formula says so" half a dozen times, and Noah had said "that's the formula, not you."

By three, Cassian had said "because I think the sample is too small," and Noah wrote it in the margin and underlined it twice.

"That's the first thing you've said all day that wasn't an echo," he said.

"It was the right answer?"

"It was your answer. The right one comes after."

At dinner the Haverstocks ran the table the way they ran everything.
