Chapter 5: Say It Out Loud

Britteny had stayed for ten minutes on Tuesday night, taken eleven photos of a calculator, and left the pastries.

On Wednesday afternoon, the pastries were gone, the storm was over, and Noah was sitting on the edge of the study desk with his shoes off.

"Statistics is done for the day," he said. "Now I have a different question."

Cassian looked up from the page.

"What do you want?"

"For the test? A passing grade."

"Not for the test."

Noah did not smile. He put one sock-covered foot on the rung of Cassian's chair, and Cassian felt it in his stomach.

"Last night in the dark, you said you wanted the standard deviation," Noah said. "You meant something else. So tell me what you want, in a sentence, with a verb in it."

"Sure," Cassian said.

The jar was on the desk between them. Noah tapped it with one finger.

"That's six dollars," he said. "Sure isn't a want. It's a door closing."

"I don't know how to start."

"With the first thing you say. 'I.'"

"I," Cassian said.

"Good."

"I want." His throat felt tight. "I want you to sit there and not leave."

"I'm sitting."

"I want you to keep your foot there."

Noah left his foot on the rung.

"More," Noah said. "What does the verb do?"

Cassian looked at Noah's mouth, then at his hands, and then at the buttons on the old green hoodie, and gave up on the page.

"I want to put my mouth on you," he said. "I want to be on my knees. I've wanted it since the bath, and I don't know why I'm saying it like a person reading a list."

For a moment Noah only breathed.
