Chapter 10: The Ring Box
Tobias's POV
My sister received me in her penthouse at seven, in a silk robe, with a glass of white wine she had not touched.
She was never anything but composed.
That was the thing about Philippa that I had admired for thirty-two years, and for the first time I wanted to break it.
"She told you," Philippa said.
"She sent me photographs of a folder. Your handwriting is on every page."
"Marcy Linden has your number, then. Interesting."
"Marcy Linden is a better friend than I have been a brother."
Philippa set down the glass.
"Sit, Toby."
"I'll stand."
"Then stand. I'm going to explain it once, and you're going to listen, because you are the only person in this family who ever listens."
I stood.
She crossed her legs.
"Father's trust names the first grandchild of my marriage," she said. "I can't have one. You know I can't. I was twenty-six, and I woke up in a recovery room without a womb, and the first thing he said was that it was a pity."
"I was there."
"Then you know. I had six years to hate it. And then I found a way."
"You found a woman."
"I gave her a man who cooked," Philippa said. "Three years of someone coming home to her, Toby. Do you know how many women would trade for that?"
"She didn't know she was trading."
"Most don't."
I felt the muscle in my jaw tighten.
"You stole her body for three years," I said.
"I borrowed it. The baby would be hers and mine. She'd never want for anything. I'd have given her a house, a monthly allowance, a position in the company."
