Chapter 11: Terms
"Marcy," I said. "Put the bat down."
I was standing behind her in the hall in one of her old college T-shirts, with my hair in a knot and the coupon binder under my arm.
I hadn't let go of it since the apartment.
"He has a ring," Marcy said.
"I see that."
"He's going to ask you something stupid."
"Probably."
Tobias Roswell stood on the landing in the porch light, with a small velvet box in one hand and the other hand open at his side.
He looked tired.
He looked like he knew exactly how stupid it was.
"May I come in?" he said.
"No," said Marcy.
"Yes," I said.
We sat at her kitchen table.
Marcy stood in the doorway with her bat and her arms crossed.
Tobias put the box on the table but did not open it.
"My sister has told me what she plans to do," he said. "If you fight for this child, she will file for custody. Gavin is the father on paper. He has a wife and Roswell money. A judge will like him."
"And me?"
"A judge will see a single woman with no family and no savings."
"So I give up?"
"No." He put his palms on the table. "You marry me."
Marcy said, from the door, "I am going to be sick."
I looked at him.
"I'm serious," Tobias said. "If you're my wife, you have a name no judge will ignore. You hold voting shares through me. My father's lawyers can't touch the child without touching the whole company. Philippa won't dare."
"That's a marriage of convenience."
"Yes."
"With you."
"Yes."
"The man who sent the lawyer."
He didn't answer for a moment.
