Chapter 11: Bridie

I did not say anything for a while.

Mindy stayed in the doorway. She did not come closer.

"We had the same father," she said. "He left my mother when I was seven and married yours the next year. You were born when I was eight."

"Bridget," I said.

"Bridie, when I was little."

"You never answered my letters."

"I never got them."

I looked at the photograph in my lap, the young woman in the garden with her wrist at her mouth.

"I wrote you every Christmas for eleven years," I said. "To the house in Portland."

"My mother died seven years ago, Kaitlyn. The house was sold. I was married and I was moving, and I had changed my name to Mindy because I couldn't stand being Dad's Bridget anymore."

She took a wallet from the back pocket of her jeans.

She slid a photograph out of the plastic window.

She walked across the carpet and held it down to me.

It was a photograph gone soft at the corners.

A small girl of about eight stood in front of a brick house, holding a baby in a yellow blanket.

A tall man stood behind them with his hands on the girl's shoulders. He was grinning.

I knew the yellow blanket. I had slept under it until I was nine.

I knew the man.

I had the same photograph in a shoebox in my closet, with a crease down the middle.

For all my life I had not known who the girl was.

"That's me," I said. My voice sounded like it belonged to someone else. "The baby."
