Chapter 12: He Knew
"Somebody told you in March," I said. "Who?"
Mindy held my hands and did not answer.
She looked toward the door, and I turned my head.
Gabe stood in the hallway with his keys still in his fist.
He must have come in through the garage. He was wearing yesterday's shirt, and his face was gray.
"I called him," Mindy said quietly. "After you left the shop. I told him it was time."
I got up off the carpet.
"You knew," I said.
"Kaitlyn."
"You knew in March."
"Yes."
He said it right away, without a single excuse in front of it, and somehow that was worse.
"You sat across from me at your mother's table," I said. "For four months. You passed me the potatoes."
"I know."
"You built that deck."
"Kaitlyn, I know."
"You let me sleep in your loft," I said. My voice shook.
"I wanted you somewhere safe."
"Safe."
"Please let me tell you how it happened."
"Last night I asked you three times. Three. You said one night."
"I said it because I was a coward."
I walked across the office until I stood in front of him.
I had to tip my head back to look at him.
"Say it, then," I said. "Say all of it, with her listening."
He swallowed.
"I found the obituary in Glen's desk in March. I was looking for a stapler." He said it flatly, like he had practiced it in the truck. "I read it twice. I saw the circles. Then I looked in the drawer under it, and I saw the other photographs."
"What did you do?"
